Kinshasa
Welcome to Kinshasa, one of Africa's largest and most electrifying cities, where the mighty Congo River forms its dramatic western border.
Explore: KinshasaYangambi is located about 100 kilometers west of Kisangani and can be reached by road or via the Congo River. The road connection is unpaved and can be difficult, particularly during periods of heavy rain, making river transport an important alternative.
Yangambi is one of the few places in the DRC where rainforest, conservation, scientific history and contemporary research can be experienced in the same landscape.
Yangambi has a humid equatorial climate, with rainfall possible throughout the year. Relatively drier periods generally make forest walks, road travel and outdoor activities easier, although conditions can still change quickly.
Yangambi is a remote research and forest destination rather than a conventional tourism center. Transport, accommodation and access to specialist sites should therefore be coordinated before arrival.
Travel to Yangambi requires advance planning, particularly for transport, accommodation and access to research or protected areas. Infrastructure is limited compared with Kisangani, and road conditions can deteriorate significantly after heavy rain.
Yangambi lies on the northern bank of the Congo River in Tshopo Province, roughly 100 kilometers west of Kisangani. The wider Yangambi landscape includes protected forest, agricultural land, settlements and research areas covering thousands of square kilometers.
From 1933 to 1962, Yangambi hosted the African headquarters of INEAC, a major center for tropical agriculture and forestry research. Its facilities included laboratories, experimental plantations, a major herbarium and an extensive scientific library. Today, INERA and international partners continue research in botany, forestry, climate science and sustainable land management.
The nearby Yangambi Biosphere Reserve was created in 1939 and entered UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere network in the 1970s, reflecting the ecological importance of the surrounding forest landscape.
For travelers, Yangambi offers an unusual combination of rainforest exploration, scientific heritage and river travel — making it one of the most distinctive destinations around Kisangani.
Yangambi brings together local communities, Congolese researchers, technicians and international scientists working within one of the world’s most important tropical forest regions.
Explore historic laboratories, tropical forest, experimental plots and the banks of the Congo River within a landscape shaped by nearly a century of scientific study.
Yangambi reveals how ecology, climate, agriculture and human livelihoods are interconnected — offering a deeper understanding of the Congo Basin beyond its landscapes alone.
Responsible visits can support local services while drawing attention to the scientific, conservation and restoration work helping protect the wider Yangambi landscape.
